Making her WPL debut, Ismail castled Shafali Varma cheaply to provide an early breakthrough to the defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Former South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail bagged the first wicket of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 on Friday at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Making her tournament debut, the right quick castled Delhi Capitals opener Shafali Varma cheaply to provide an early breakthrough to the defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Ismail struck in the second over of her spell to dismiss Verma for an 8-ball 1. The seasoned pacer bowled an off-cutter which shapes back in from a length. The DC opener played across the line but got beaten as the ball rocked the middle stump.

Ismail had another opportunity in the 17th over as Alice Capsey, who scored the first half-century of the tournament, top-edged a short delivery but S Sajana dropped a regulation catch backward point. The MI quick returned 1 for 24 in 4 overs.

Meanwhile, Capsey scored a brilliant 75 off 53 balls as DC posted 171/5 in 20 overs. She joined her skipper Meg Lanning after Verma’s early departure. The duo of Capsey and Lanning mustered 64 runs in just over eight overs after making a steady start. Delhi were 26 for 1 after the six Power Play overs.

But the English batter started the blitz, bunting experienced English pacer Nat Sciver-Brunt for two successive pulled fours through mid-wicket.

Lanning hammered the first six of the match and tournament when she lofted leg-spinner S Keerthana over long-on. But Brunt broke the burgeoning alliance when she ousted the DC skipper. But Capsey remained relentless in the company of her vice-captain Jemimah Rodrigues, together adding 73 runs for an entertaining third-wicket partnership in 7.3 overs.

She was particularly ruthless against leg-spinner and countrymate Amelia Kerr, whom she slammed for a couple of fours. But Kerr had the last laugh when she trapped Capsey leg before but Capitals were already in a position of strength.
