The celebrations for the Bengal bowler ensued after his scalp of Zak Crawley but had to be cut short as the dreaded no-ball siren went off next, signalling the pacer had overstepped and hence could not be awarded the wicket.

Castled and that’s out! Well, not really. Bengal pacer and now India debutant Akash Deep scalped the first wicket of his international career, only for it to be disallowed.

Akash Deep took to the new ball from the second over onwards, bowling a tight line with consistently menacing pace, keeping both England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett under control.

In his second over with the ball, Akash Deep bowled an absolute peach, which nipped back from a length around off to leave Crawley beaten, as the ball crashed onto the stumps as it burst past Crawley’s inside edge removing the off stump clean.

The celebrations for the Bengal bowler ensued instantly, but had to be cut short as the dreaded no-ball siren went off next, signalling that the pacer had overstepped and hence could not be awarded the wicket.

Hence, his wicket had to be rescinded and the pacer still remains on the hunt for his maiden wicket for India.

Akash Deep became the 313th Test cricketer to represent India at the international level as he was handed his debut cap by coach Rahul Dravid, ahead of the fourth Test of the five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi today.

The Bengal pacer had got his maiden Test call-up for the last three Tests as the selectors decided to pick him in place of Avesh Khan. In fact, Akash Deep has already got call-up in India limited overs squads in the past – Asian Games (T20Is) and South Africa tour (ODIs).

The 27-year-old paceman from Bengal impressed the team management with his performance for India A side in the three unofficial Tests against England Lions.

He was the leading wicket-taker for India A in the series with 13 scalps in the three matches he played. He also claimed a couple of four-fers.

Akash Deep was brought in as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, who is being rested to manage his workload in the playing XI.
