Kevin Pietersen said England’s spin bowlers are a ‘big concern’ and feels they will not be ‘outbowling’ their Indian counterparts.

Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed the English spinner all over the ground with a blazing unbeaten 76 off 70 balls as India ended day one’s play in the first Test at 119/1 in 23 overs, trailing England by 127 runs after the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel took eight wickets to bowl out the visitors for 246 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Kevin Pietersen after the end of the first day’s play conceded that the English spin trio of Tom Hartley, Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed are his ‘big concern’ and feels they will not be ‘outbowling’ their Indian counterparts.

“My big concern is England’s spinners. I said it before the series. When we won here in 2012, we had Swann and Panesar, who outbowled Ashwin, Harbhajan and Pragyan Ojha. Unfortunately, from what I have seen here today, I can’t see these three spinners outbowling Indian spinners. I just didn’t see the ball spin enough. A couple of balls, they got to spin,” Kevin Pietersen said while speaking on Sports18.

“But England spinners just never got the border spin. Yes, they weren’t allowed to spin it because Yashasvi Jaiswal was hitting it. But also you only need one ball to spin or two balls to spin. They just couldn’t get into spin. You contrast that with India. First of all, we thought, Oh, here we go. Next ball. Then we get the ball to bounce. Then we get the ball to spin. Then another one bounces. We just didn’t see that with the England spinners,” Pietersen added.

Such was Jaiswal’s dominance that he hammered debutant England left-arm spinner Hartely for two sixes in the second over of India’s first innings to impose himself on the match.

The only wicket to fall for India though was skipper Rohit Sharma, who was dismissed for 24 after being deceived in flight by Leach as his lofted drive was caught by Ben Stokes at mid-on.

Jaiswal continued to hammer boundaries off Hartley and Rehan Ahmed till stumps arrived.
