The Australian head coach further emphasised on how important Glenn Maxwell has been for Australia in white ball cricket.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has warned Glenn Maxwell to be more cautious about his choices moving forward following an alcohol-related incident in Adelaide. Maxwell was recently left embarrassed as the cricketer reportedly passed out during a night out in Adelaide last Friday. It even led to a brief hospitalisation of the Aussie all-rounder but luckily it was nothing serious. Post this incident, McDonald had a small chat with his player and told SEN, “I’ve spoken to Glenn, had a good chat with him yesterday around the incident…Him looking after himself needs to be a consideration moving forward.”

Maxwell was recently invited to a golf event in Adelaide. This led to the Aussie all-rounder flying from Melbourne to play on a warm afternoon in the invited city. Having finished his golf session, Maxwell went the night out drinking at a pub. This was where the cricketer passed out and had to be taken to the emergency room of a hospital in an ambulance. He was later discharged by the hospital as there was no need to admit the player. This led to the Australian head coach having a conversation with the player about using his time wisely.

“He’s had a few drinks and clearly the night has ended the way that it did and that’s less than ideal from his perspective and our perspective. It’s an honest mistake”, said Andrew McDonald.

The coach then added that the break allotted to the player was for him to rest and rehab. He felt that Maxwell should be responsible enough to keep his end of the bargain by taking care of himself.

The Australian head coach further emphasised on how important Glenn Maxwell has been for Australia in white ball cricket. According to McDonald, Maxwell’s presence in the squad makes Australia a much better team. Hence, he just wants his player to remain in top shape for the next three to four years at least. “We want Glenn Maxwell playing cricket for the next three to four years for Australia…He’s a key player in our white-ball formats. When he is out there we’re a far better team,” the Aussie coach concluded.

Maxwell has not played competitive cricket since his Big Bash League 2023-24 game on January 15. He was rested by the Australian cricket team from the nation’s ODI series with the West Indies. The cricketer will soon be making a return in an Australian kit on February 9 in the T20I format against the Caribbean nation.
