Anil Kumble had asked Yashasvi Jaiswal to keep working on his bowling at the third test of the India-England series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal might benefit from having the blessings of a legendary leg spinner like Anil Kumble as the 22-year-old youngster got a chance to roll his arms on Day one of the fourth Test between India and England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. After winning the toss, England opted to bat first in what seemed like a good decision because of the nature of the pitch. However, debutant Akash Deep was simply sensational as his seven-over opening spell saw him scalp the three top-order wickets – Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Ollie Pope. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bagged a wicket each at the stroke of lunch to leave England reeling at 112-5, but Joe Root’s 31st century – a record 10th against India in Tests – helped the visitors finish Day 1 in the driver’s seat at 302-7.

While Rohit Sharma and his men wasted three reviews to be left with none heading into Day 2, one thing that has surely made fans excited was Rohit’s decision to hand the ball to Yashasvi Jaiswal in the final over of Day 1.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who can bowl leg breaks as a part-timer and whose action is partly reminiscent of Australian legend Shane Warne, gave away six runs in the only over he bowled.

Following India’s 434-run win in the third Test, which was played in Rajkot, former India leg spinner Anil Kumble and former English cricketer Nick Knight had a pretty entertaining conversation with the young Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Anil Kumble, a master of his craft and one of the greatest exponents of spin bowling in cricket history with over 900 wickets in international cricket, asked Jaiswal to keep working on his bowling. He even went as far as to say that the dashing southpaw should ask his captain Rohit Sharma to hand him the ball for a few overs.

“Well done on your batting. But one thing that I have seen which I want you to continue as well is that you have a natural leg spin. Yes, and action. So don’t give up on that. Because you never know when that will come in handy. know you’ve had a back spasm, but when you’re working so much on it. Go tell the skipper to give a few overs,” Anil Kumble said during the post-match show on JioCinema.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is having a terrific Test series so far, scoring back-to-back double centuries and breaking a host of records in his debut home Test series. He’s the leading run-getter in the ongoing series. While there’s absolutely no doubt whatsoever about his batting ability, don’t be surprised if he enters his name into the wickets’ column in the near future.
