In Season Now – July
I love the summer time.
Besides enjoying the sun and the beach, I love going to open air markets without having to don rain boots or snow gear. I realize this will sound ridiculous but I’m also incredibly excited that I can finally eat tomatoes again, fresh tomatoes of course. This absolutely mundane fruit/vegetable that is available in supermarkets year round, to me really means summer. This is when they are finally red and juicy and flavorful. Not those disgusting pinkish whitish ones…
So anyways, I went to the Sant’Agostino market in Milan (Italy) and took a whole bunch of pictures. The produce that was on offer fully reflects some of the delicious options this season has to offer. This open air market is open on Tuesdays (7:30am – 1pm) and Saturdays (7:30am – 5pm). It offers a wide array of … well stuff… including fruits, vegetables, flowers, bread, cheese, fish, rotisserie chicken, herbs and spices. The Saturday market offers all of the above stuff, plus much more like fake leather handbags to real leather handbags, shoes and dresses made in China, and even a few Italian antiques. The people watching is also great. Each hour this market’s clientele changes reflecting the various facets of the Milanese (old and new).
