Good food makes me happy – Trattoria del Nuovo Macello, Milan

You know those moments when you are so hungry that you can’t think. Or even worse you’re so hungry you could chew someone’s head off. Not literally, because you don’t want to eat them, but you are in a mood where you can tell them where to shove it and then some.

I was there.

Sitting in the car with my husband waiting for his boss’s flight to arrive. I sat there and realized that for one reason or another I had not eaten since breakfast and now it was around 8pm. And well to be honest I usually eat every 4 hours.

My husband had just about had enough of me, and sent me off into the airport to get something to eat. He sent me (and my wobbly foot) because I was so hungry I couldn’t think straight enough to decide on what I wanted. And he knew that if he went and came back with the wrong something he risked my emotional meltdown.

After purveying the aisles of the convenient store at the airport I decided to eat a banana and some dried apricots. I was hungry but I didn’t want to ruin my appetite eating trash and not have room for a real meal.

Only to arrive to the checkout counter and have someone try and but me in line. Fumes where coming from my head. I was going to hurt this man with my death stare. I was so pissed, and I made sure the man knew.

He apologized, genuinely. And I felt horrible. I explained I was HUNGRY. The clerk proceeded to say it was ok for me to eat the dried apricots, even if I hadn’t yet paid…

It was that bad.

So now I’m back in the car. I’ve eaten my fruit, and I’m back to being a normal human being. Now we just had to decide on where to eat. We opted to go to the “Trattoria del Nuovo Macello“, which is pretty much on the road to/from Milan’s Linate airport. Which meant we didn’t have to travel too far to get real food nor risk my hunger to coming back with a vengeance.

This restaurant is kind of on the outskirts of the city and away from where most tourists visits (aka they cater to locals and Italians – people they can’t feed bad food and expect to stay open).

I guess I should also explain that “Nuovo Macello” in Italian means “new slaughterhouse”. Back when the restaurant open in 1928 it was in front of the then “new slaughterhouse”.

Anyways fast forward a few decades and the “Trattoria del Nuovo Macello” is still around. The trattoria still maintains it’s old world/Milan charm. It has the traditional dark wooden trattoria chairs and an interior that says Sunday dinner at your hypothetical Italian grandma’s house. Basically it looks like what you imagine an Italian trattoria should, and you (me/we) love it for that.

But they have revamped the cuisine. Offering traditional Milanese and Italian food with a twist.

The day we went we order the “Surprise Tasting Menu” with features 4 courses of the chef’s picking all for just 33 euros. By the way, I think that is a spectacular price considering the quality of the food and the fact that this is Milan.

If i remember correctly they offered us the choice of doing a seafood or a meat tasting menu. And of course we were able to tell them of any allergies or any specific things we don’t like.

The dishes we ended up having included “Beef tartare Tokyo and Turin”. Bread gnochetti with black eyed peas, veal meatballs with artichokes and pine nuts in a sweet and savory sauce, followed by vanilla ice-cream with poached pears and homemade granola bar.

Besides the food they have a really good wine list and friendly personnel too. They waiters manage to walk that fine line between being haute cuisine formal using the “Lei” (Italian second person formal) and welcoming like we’re old friends that have come over to visit.

All in all I (we) walked out of there tummy full, and smile(s) on my face(s).

Good food makes me happy. 🙂
